Free Resume Formats
Providing the Structure to Your Resume

Free resume formats are your guide to writing a power packed resume that highlights your skills & qualifications, showcasing them for prospective employers!

If you're following the steps to writing a free resume then you should have created an outline of a resume already.

Now, you'll determine which format will work best for your particular situation.

Don't get confused between resume formats and layouts or designs!

Formatting is the structure of the resume based on your qualifications or work history.

Layout and/or design is how you present the format of your resume. It's the fancy borders, graphics, or fonts that some people add for visual appeal.

Want to know a little secret?

Employers and/or recruiters are not interested in how fancy your resume looks. They are more interested in the "content." Are you the person for the job and can you benefit the organization? Answer these questions and you get the interview.

Resume writing consists of three basic formats: chronological, functional, and combination. Each one has its own distinct purpose designed to fit your need.

Review the free resume formats below and determine which one fits your particular situation:

Chronological Resume Format

  • Most commonly used format
  • Written in reverse chronological order (most recent employment & education listed first)
  • Easiest to write

Good format to use if you've had a consistent work history and/or your current job or schooling directly relates to the position you are seeking.

Functional Resume Format

  • Skills & abilities highlighted rather than work history
  • Good to use if re-entering the workforce after a period of absence
  • Use this if you are changing career fields using experience & skills gained over a period of time

Headings used for this format could be Management, Leadership, Coaching, Training, Sales, or Computer Skills.

Combination Resume Format

It contains the best of the Chronological & Functional combined to accentuate your positives. Focus on your objective when using this format.
